When and how did you get into drifting and/or other motor sports?
I first heard about drifting through a friend 5 or 6 years ago. I was too young to drive, but I watched a lot of videos, and read a lot on the internet. I started picking up magazines at the local Japanese grocery store. When I did get old enough to drive, Project A. Spec (www.projectaspec.com) helped me get into drifting by holding the only drift events in michigan.
What was the first car you used for drifting?
My first car, and first drift car was a 1979 Datsun 280zx
How did it work out for you?
It was really long and heavy, but it helped me learn all of the basics.
What was your most practiced technique?
My most practiced technique in that car was using its weight to initiate a drift.
What is it now?
Right now I’d say my most practiced technique is the clutch kick. I had a KA for most of the season and I needed to kick the clutch a lot to keep the drift going, get more angle, or iniatiate.
Where are you looking to improve?
Right now I’m looking to improve my feint drift, and linking straightaways
What types of events have you participated in?
I’ve participated in Project A. Spec events, Drift Mania Canadian Championship Round 4, and Ohio Drifting’s Drift-A-Palooza. Along with weekly Test-N-Tunes at Autocity Speedway.
What type of events have you competed in?
Same as above, minus the test-n-tunes. I took 2nd place at Drift-A-Palooza, and 2nd place at Speedrift 10.
What do you find challenging?
Right now my biggest challenge is not having enough money to build my car how I would like it. I’m dropping out of college temporarily so I can work more and make it out to more events. I’m also eating a lot of ramen to save money for my car. Whatever works, haha.
Who are your influences?
I’ve got quite a few influences. I’d like to start with Mitsuru Haraguchi, as he was the first driver that got me really excited about drifting. Also, Brian Wilkerson from MA-Motorsports, Justin Pawlak, Forrest Wang, there’s a lot.
What modifications would you like to have in the future?
This winter I plan on getting widebody front and rear fenders, aero, wheels, a larger radiator, and a cage. Further in the future, I’d like to build my motor up with forged internals, increase the power output, a cupholder would be nice too.
What are your future plans in drifting?
I plan on supporting all of the local events, we’re really struggling to keep drifting happening in Michigan. But I also plan on going to ClubFR events, more Ohio events, back to the DMCC, Drift Indy, Beaverun, VIR, Nopi, whatever I can make it out to really. I’m willing to drive hours upon hours and sleep in my car
What are your thoughts on the future of drifting?
I can’t wait to see what drifting has in store in the future, I hope it becomes as large here as it is in Japan. I love seeing the excitement in peoples faces when they watch drifting, it’s one of the main reasons I do it, and I’d like to see that excitement in more people.
