When and how did you get into drifting and/or other motor sports?
Well , I learned about drifting about 5 years ago when I was sitting in a waiting area in a speed shop when a mechanic walked up to the TV and put a tape into the VCR and said "watch this shit"! What I saw blew my mind. It was an all girl drift team from Japan. I couldn’t believe their car control and how they were sliding their cars so close together around the track. I sat there and watched the whole tape. Come to find out this tape was of course Option Video. That’s what got my hooked. I bought tons of JDM magazines and videos and watched them with my friends. Now, as far as motor sports, I've been into that since I was a kid. I would watch every Formula One race that was aired on TV at the time, and I still do, Tifosi for life!..lol..Anyway, knowing what I knew about racing, I knew anything to do with cars going around the race track cost money, and lots of it. Back then I figured drifting was no different, until I met my friends from FourTenDrift. They really opened my eyes to how fun drifting can be. I found out its more about having fun, hanging out and meeting more people to slide with then it was spending tons of money. Thanks to them, I was getting better and better with wore practice and tips from other drifters. As time went by, everyone from FOURTENDRIFT went their own way the group disbanded. Luckily I was fortunate enough to meet another great bunch of guys and girls this time known as 302Garage. This new group is a mix between drifters, auto x’ers, and all out hardcore motor sports enthusiasts, which is what I’ve been looking for all along.
What was the first car you used for drifting?
My trusty 240 that I have now. I learned to slide my car in its stock form and I'm a strong believer in getting to know your car before you change your car. Every part on my car was tested by me to make sure the part had a positive function. To many kids these days buy these S13's and S14's and automatically want to throw a faster motor in or install a ton of parts all at once before the even drive their car.
How did it work out for you?
It worked out fine, and still does. I love the feel of my 240. To me, it’s definitely a driver’s car in my opinion. I would not have minded learning in an AE86, since some say that’s a good chassis to learn in and you would be an all around better driver/drifter, but I do ok in my S13.
What was your most practiced technique?
Well, of course, when I 1st started out it was all feint then ebrake to get used to the feel of the rear of my car sliding out. I was having fun with this technique so I stayed with it for awhile. Then, as time went on I learned through my friends about more advanced techniques like clutch and braking etc.
What is it now?
To me, I like to have fun when I’m drifting more than impressing people who are watching. So, I stick to my little feint -clutch kicking for now. Also , if I’m approaching a corner where there’s something on the other side to hit , I WILL pull the ebrake to make sure the rear comes out , I don’t like wrecking my car...ha!
Where are you looking to improve?
I need more seat/track time. I need to improve my high speed drifting. Also, I need more practice with more of the technical aspects of drifting. Even the best are still learning, so that means I have a looooong way to go.
What types of events have you participated in?
Years ago I did a three day weekend track event at Skip Barber racing School in Pocono PA. There I learned a lot about racing line, braking, patience, discipline etc. It was definitely one of the best experiences ever.
What type of events have you competed in?
I'll be honest, I’ve only done one auto x event with my 240. All my drifting practice has been in wide open vacant lots. Now, before you brush me off as some lame ass, let me say this, a corner is a corner is a corner, some drift events are held in lots are they not? Plus, the lot I practice in is huge, unlike the average parking lot, and it’s been abandoned for years. Nothing to hit, no innocent people, not even a mouse..lol. I’ve been able to learn all my drift techniques at this place. I’ve even called the owners who for some reason have no plans to build anything there and asked them if they would be interested in holding motor sport events there, of course they said no. My friends and I have set up cones there to mimic a nice technical course, and we have so much fun with it, which to me is what counts.
What do you find challenging?
Keeping up with the more experienced drivers/drifters in our group. Which is good because if you’re never around people who are better than you, then there’s no one to push you and to help you improve? Also , a lot of downtime is challenging , which is something we all go through with our cars or when more important things happen in our personal lives that we have to step away from drifting for awhile and deal with.
Who are your influences?
Funny thing is I don’t have any, not that I didn’t before though. When 1st got into drifting I looked up to drivers like Akinori Utsumi, Fumiaki Komatsu and the Drift King. Now that drifting is what I do instead of what I’m a fan of, I really don’t have any influences now. I just want to make myself better.
What modifications would you like to have in the future?
Mostly footwork. Id like to get Rear Upper Control Arms , Rear Toe Links , Rear Traction Links , Rear Subframe Collars , Aluminum one piece Drive Shaft , and some better brake rotors and calipers. For my KA I’d like JWT Stage one Cams and some nice head work. I really don’t see the need for high horse powers engine this stage of my skill level. Tomie 2 way lsd, I drove my friends 240 that had a Tomie 2 way lsd in it and it really felt nice. They're hardly any work involed in getting the rear to break loose with this unit.
What are your future plans in drifting?
Keep at it and attend few local events. I know I’m not getting any younger but I definitely never feel my age. The thing that keeps me going is the fun factor of drifting and the fact that a lot of members in our group are all around the same age. Plus, I heard that there is a 40 and up drift club in Japan, so I’m not quitting anytime soon. Ill do this as long as I’m able.
What are your thoughts on the future of drifting?
I really don’t care. If drifting became something that only losers do , id be the biggest loser of all cause id still be doing it no mater what. It’s not a fad to me, and never will be. I know there are people out there that are into our sport for the "cool factor" only. Once they hear of something else stirring up they'll jump right on it and forget about drifting. The sport doesn’t need those types anyway, the grassroots drifters started it and the right people will keep it going for the right reasons.
Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I love food, my cat, my friends and family. I never was the type to give a shit what others thought of me. I’m glad I’m as weird and outgoing as I am; it helps stay sane and deal with things with less stress. People think I’m a bit off my rocker when they 1st meet me, which is funny because that’s just me. They learn I’m different and they like that.
