When and how did you get into drifting and/or other motor sports?
I first started in SCCA's Solo2 about 4 seasons ago and did that religiously
until I discovered track and drifting. I first started messing around with sliding when I first got my license, but just for fun. I only started to really want to get into it after I did a drift in my 325is E30 BMW in the dry. Then got my 240SX and started running track events, autoX and drifting with it. I now use a 2002 Honda Civic Si for track events and lapping days/autoX and use the 240SX primarily for drifting with the occasional track day. I also completed the Bondurant 4 day Grand Prix racing school and acquired my SCCA racing license this year (2005). I now instruct at various lapping days.
What was the first car you used for drifting?
The first real drift I did was in my E30 325is BMW, but it was hard to find
parts for it, so I decided to scrap that project and buy an S13 240SX.
How did it work out for you?
It was great, the body roll was immense, the tires squealed like crazy, the
hair on the back of my neck stood up and I started giggling like a crazed
maniac. The bug bit me after that one 2nd gear slide.
What was your most practiced technique?
I have never really drifted in the streets, except that one drift. haha When
I first started doing events I mainly focused on linking any course that I
encountered.
What is it now?
I now work mostly on my line, speed and tandem techniques.
Where are you looking to improve?
I am still looking to learn better initiation techniques for various course
layouts and always wanting to improve tandem skills. Basically just get as
close to the opponent as possible.
What types of events have you participated in?
I have participated in various regional events, a Drift Showoff in TX, an
RS*R drift competition in Chicago, a bunch of drift demos at different race
tracks (Mid-Ohio, Waterford Hills) and a PRO event for ESPN in Indy.
What type of events have you competed in?
Many regional competitions and some national, mostly out of state, IL, OH
and PA, TX and some in MI.
What do you find challenging?
Making sure that my car is always in tip top shape from all the abuse it
receives.
Who are your influences?
At first I just enjoyed drifting because it was a blast and I liked the
feeling of linking a course together. Now that I have many more factors to
worry about (line, speed, tandem, smoke/angle) I have a great amount of
respect for my "United Drift" (www.United-Drift.com) teammates (Tadashi
Ikegami, Peter Chhuom, John Wagner, Rob Riter). We have learned a lot from
each other and always push each other to improve. In the past few months
Vaughn Gittin Jr. has been a great influence in my drifting. After competing
with him at the ESPN event, I found many new things to work on and received
a lot of great advice. He's a very stand up guy and I really look forward to
competing with him in the near future in Formula D. I also think Rhys Millen
is pretty cool, because well, he's Rhys Millen. Ken Gushi was the first
driver I really admired when I met him at the RS*R event in 2004 and I still
think he's just awesome!!!
What modifications would you like to have in the future?
I would like more power, a better car and to have my chassis stitch welded.
What are your future plans in drifting?
I will be competing in the Formula D series in the 2006 season and hope to
qualify in every event that I compete in.
What are your thoughts on the future of drifting?
It's a huge boom right now and will continue to grow. I hope that if pointed
in the right direction it will be one of the most popular Motorsports and
gain the recognition it deserves.
Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I figure skate for a living. I love racing obviously. I have the weirdest
cats ever (a Scottish Fold named Zeus). My girlfriend also figure skates...
yes I have a girlfriend. Did I mention I figure skate?
